We recorded Journey Through The Highlands at Twin Cedars Studios located upstairs in Michael and Lynn's home, nestled among evergreen trees in Portland. Everyone did a great job of keeping the atmosphere relaxed and home-like. Lynn always kept us well supplied with tea and snacks and sometimes was relied on as a human metronome and tuner! Terry helped make the numerous decisions that popped up, such as telling us when a take was good enough! Michael set up the microphones and operated the recording equipment and computer. Michael hails from England and kept us awake with his delightful accent and "pun of the day". After each recording session, Lynn provided what was practically a full dinner with appetizers, main courses, and dessert!
Recording lingo we learned:
Take: each time you record a tune or section it is called a "take" and recording engineers like to have several to "work with".
Wave form: how your music is represented when it is digitally transferred to the computer. It looks like tight, jagged lines. An engineer can work with these lines to "fix" errors.
Compression: Making the dynamic range of the wave forms more even.
