In the end of August we enjoyed a brief trip to Washington to celebrate a dear friend's homeschool graduation!
Playing a group game.
Lining up for dancing!
the girls
We spent the night - our family's first time at a real campsite! (Please don't ask me why Krista appears to be roasting her foot.)
Janna and a little rainbow at Rainbow Falls State Park.
On our hike, Noah went wading in the river. He then had to suffer the consequences of wet-muddy-feet-that-need-to-go-back-in-shoes.
We went hiking on the old railroad, passing through some beautiful farms. Afterwards we enjoyed smoothies, iced coffee, and visiting and jamming with friends at a nearby coffee shop.
Before our concert at Crossroads. We had a great time - thank you to everyone to came.
We went to the coast and bought tuna from a fisherman before Labor Day.
His lovely boat was called the Grace Elizabeth
Yaquina Head Lighthouse
I buried Noah.
(and then regretted my deed...)
On Labor Day we girls and Dad hiked Bachelor Mountain near Detroit Lake with a couple of homeschool alumni friends. We found what we thought was the trail head, but all we could see was an overgrown sign and wild landscape. The state park website said the trail usage was "low", but we didn't expect it to be this low! We plunged ahead...
...and found the trail, or lack there of. ;)
Following Brian's GPS, we headed through more brush, up a steep hill, and there was the trail!
The picture Dad was taking in the last picture

| Photo by Nathan The clouds blew off the peak just for the time we were at the top of Bachelor having our lunch. When we headed back down, they were beginning to cover it again. |
We followed the trail back down and found the actual trailhead.
Krista and I at a wedding we played for Saturday.
We were thankful for the canopy that covered everyone during the wedding!
Enjoy Autumn!
Cheers,
Kathrina

What fun you all had!!! (Although I'm convinced you have too much of it! ;) ) Just kidding.....
Those pictures are very pretty--thanks for posting them!
~Bethany
May I ask Krista why she is roasting her foot? ;)
~Shiloh
S: Probably because it was roasting hot out that day...
Cool pictures, but I would have to agree with Bethany, you guys have too much fun :).
And if _I_ buried Noah, I wouldn't have regretted it one bit... unless I buried his face, then I might have felt a _little_ bit sorry for him.
Daniel
PS: Was that really your first time at a campsite?
@Shiloh - We were just waiting for one of you girls to ask that, though we suspected Bethany would be the one who remembered it at the end of the post - oh wait, that's right, Bethany doesn't read the text, just the photos. ;)
@Daniel - Can you believe it? We used to have all our vacations with our Grandma, so we always had a cabin. I guess we are branching out. (pun intended:))
(Pun figured out ;)). By the way, what is the official definition of "real" camping?
Daniel
@ Bisceglia ~ Yes, Bethany only looks at the pictures… :) Although this time she *did* scan the text because she told me about the post before I saw it! ;)
That’s funny about you all branching out in camping! We are too! We used to always use a hotel or RV, but we have tent camped (dry) as a family once (we hated it—long story). But most recently all of us girls made a tent in our backyard out of sheets and close pens and we really did sleep out in it all night. It was freezing, but we all had so much fun we’ve been talking about doing it again. Do you all want to join us? ;)
@ Daniel~ According to the Encarta Dictionary: Camping- living in tents: living outdoors in a tent or trailer while on vacation or as a recreational activity
@ Everyone~ I think I will have to “triple” what everyone already said and agree with Bethany and Daniel… You all do have too much fun!! Here I am sitting here trying to learn how to speed read (I have to do it for an hour) and you all are having _too_ much_ fun! Next time you go on the hiking trip—I want to come too!!! =)
~Shiloh
Daniel~ Then why are they having a campfire on a "roasting hot day"?
Bisceglia~ Um is Krista going to answer my question?? She looks like I did when I had a staff infection, but I was had my foot in lots of different things- not the fire. ;)
~Shiloh
Shilo: great, now what's the definition of "real" camping? :)
Danie~ (my siblings said I should spell your name wrong since you keep doing that to mine):
Real Camping: A tent, cooking meals outside, no running water, sleeping bags, etc.
Fun Camping: A tent, blow-up beds, a portable heater, bathrooms (running water) in walking distance, pre-cooked meals, etc.
Ok- so we've done dry camping and RV camping. With a large family and lots of small ones- RV is much nicer!!! But tent camping is fun to talk about. ;)
~Shiloh
“Sheet Camping” in nearly freezing weather is a whole different ball game.
@ Kathrina: Well, a picture is worth a 1000 words! ;) Doesn't that count!!!
~Bethany
Shilog: I keep missing the H ;).
Hunting With Philip: "Sleep??? You don't need sleep!!! Hungry? Here have an energy bar. Take a shower!" "We don't have running water..." "Who cares?!?! Shut up you're scaring all of the animals away." etc. etc. etc.
Betgany: but you never read the captions, so you wouldn't have known that she didn't want you to ask, therefore you would never have asked :).
Daniel
I had no idea that picture would make me so popular! No, I wasn't tring to melt my shoe (like Kathrina did) or test my endurance. All I can say is I don't often sit idle, so I had to be doing something! Besides,it was a cold morning.(Dreadfully boring,I know)
-Krista
Good for you Krista! Sitting idle is never a good idea..... :)
~Bethany
And congrats on your new fame! ;)
So, did Kathrina really melt her shoe? Did she do the same as you you, or you as her?! =)
Don't worry Krista, I always try to melt my shoes on cold mornings. I always give up right before someone comes to start a fire...
Daniel
Daniel: Time to go back to typing 101 ;) As for the real definition of camping… don’t you do Alert Cadets and don’t they do camp-outs?
Krista: Did Kathrina really melt a shoe??
I certainly don’t melt my shoes on cold mornings! They are left outside all night and since they are straight rubber—they are basically frozen. Maybe I should try Daniel’s idea about “melting” them over a fire _after_someone_starts the fire… which usually is me. ;)
~Shiloh
Shiloh: Yeah, usually they do the campouts on our property, and they're kinda the happy medium in between real and fun :).
Daniel
@Bethany: It was actually Janna who commented earlier, not me. :)
@Bethany & Shiloh: The night before the picture of Krista was taken, we were sitting around the fire chatting. As it got colder, we moved closer to the fire. I rested the edge of my sandal on the metal ring around the fire. Later when I lifted my foot, I saw the melted sole pull away from the ring like taffy. :O We had a great laugh and, needless to say, my sandal has a significant amount of rubber missing. It actually looks pretty interesting. ;)
Later that night, I woke up to Sarah shoving at me. The air mattress she and Janna were sharing had gone flat, and she wanted a space on mine and Krista's mattress. :) So you can see that we have lots of great stories from our first experience at a "real" campsite.
~Kathrina
LOL! Kathrina those stories are so funny! You must have had one *hot* fire! The first time our family ever camped out was at a father/son retreat—we girls were there because we “cooked” and our family preformed a drama lesson (that’s how_I_ended up at that kind of a retreat). Anyhow we had to pitch our tent on the parking place and we only brought along foam mattresses so that was all the padding we had. :) It was freezing all night and well into the morning and then “roasting hot” (to say it in DA terms) the rest of the day!
Daniel: Fun! :) We’ve talked about camping out on our property, but we never did this summer… (?) Some of us still want to do it…. we’ll see. Oh- and congratulations for finally spelling me name correctly! It *always* takes everyone forever to get that—you’re ahead. ;)
~Shiloh
Kathrina: Lol! Why didn't you post pictures of the shoe that actually _did_ melt? :).
Jonathan shoves me in the night sometimes, usually he's asleep though :).
Shiloh: I didn't really know I had been spelling it wrong before :).
Daniel
Kathrina: Yes! Do we get to see pictures??
Daniel: No worries- the “h” is silent… We spell my name the Biblical way. Anyhow I *always* have to spell check your name on Word before I write it because I always mix up the “i” and “e”. =)
On another note: Shoving people over at night must be an “older siblings thing” ;) Now that it’s come out that both Jonathan and Sarah have *gently pushed* their siblings over~ I’ll admit that I (the eldest sibling) have done it too… =)
~Shiloh
lol, it would be an "oldest" sibling thing, if Jonathan was the oldest sibling :). All in all, Jonathan and I are pretty nice to each other, during the day... :). After that it's game on. Jonathan used to jump on me in the morning :). He always had the top bunk, and the best way to get down was obviously by jumping on my bed. Of course he had tried to wake me up, (by dropping huge stuffed animals on me) so if I got hurt, it wasn't _his_ fault. Then I would smile, and say "You're right Jonathan" and then deck him. And he would go crying off and that would be the end of it.
Daniel
@ Kathrina: Oh, I thought it was you because I didn’t know that Janna knew all that information about me… obviously she knows more about me than I thought…!!! =O
What a story too! I guess Krista was copying you!
My favorite camping story was from last year when we camped in the tent we made…
The best part was when we were “attacked” by “coyotes”! Yes, that was fun! ;)
And then when Shiloh woke up the next morning and said to me, “Bethany, I have news for you: Never pitch a tent on a hill!” :)
Oh, the “gentle” shoving… I’ve felt that quite a few times! But I must admit that even though I get my fair share of shoves, I like to put my feet (when their cold) on the back of my sisters legs… right when she’s drifting off to sleep…………. :)
~Bethany
Bethany: And that is when she shoves you and says-----
Daniel: it’s still an older siblings thing. Jonathan is older then you… Wow- we sure hope he still doesn’t jump down on you! We have a triple bunk so it’s not possible to jump down on your siblings… We wouldn’t do it anyway! =) On another note—poor Jonathan- decking him certainly doesn’t sound *very* nice and it was probably time for _you_to_be_up anyway! =)
No he doesn't jump on me anymore, our beds are about 20 feet away from each other now :)
Daniel
Oh, and it's very amusing that you all feel sorry for Jonathan :). Did I mention that we stayed up all night talking every night? (yes I talked too, however, my vocabulary at night is limited to "Yep" and "Uh-huh"). And I don't remember what time it was when Jonathan woke me up in the morning, but I think he always went and played the computer or something. Who knows, I always went back to bed after he woke me up :).
Daniel
PS If you still feel sorry for Jonathan, you should hear _his_ side of the story some time, it's even funnier (I didn't even bring up the witches that were under his bed).
20 feet apart—really?? Our room is 19 feet long and we thought that was a long room!
Ok- we don’t feel sorry for Jonathan anymore… now that you are older you’re a lot nicer to each other is sounds. LOL~ we talk to each other late into the night too- you would think we got enough talking done in the day… It used to be just the two of us older sisters, but now De joins in…. :)
You should come and spend a week at our home…. You’d *never* want to get up late (or go back to bed again) ever. We wake up at 6:00 am M-F, 7:00 am on Saturday, & 6:30 am on Sunday and if we don’t………
Oh yes, it there are *always* two sides to a story it seems….. You should write more of your stories on you Disaster blog….
~Shiloh
Oh- and on another note….. next time we see you all… maybe we’ll let Jonathan in on our secret way to get siblings out of bed in the morning if they have slept in. It’s a tried and true method and we are serious... we’ve experimented on our own sibling and it works and we’ve only had to do it once!
I think I would use that method more than he would :). Our beds are in two different rooms, but there isn't a door in between us. Jonathan's room is really tiny, and my room is kinda part my room part the family room. It used to be two rooms: a living room and a kitchen, so it's pretty big. I'm glad you don't feel sorry for him anymore (sometimes I do when I beat him in an arm-wrestle, but again, there's a second side to that story :)).
Daniel
Oh, and if I came and spent the week at your house, I wouldn't be able to resist waking you all up at 5:00 with your "method" ;).
Daniel
All of us older siblings just had a quick pow-wow and we all agree that “talk is cheap”… Besides we have all woke up at 5:00 AM before and further more you don’t know the method (sorry)… =)
Ah, but I could easily learn the method (by sleeping in one morning...).
And I'm a cheapskate, so if talk is cheap, I'm all for it ;).
Daniel
Ha! Ladies and Gentlemen, this is getting better every minute! _Now_ they take me for a city slicker!
Daniel- we actually _know_ that you are _not_ a city slicker... and we were not thinking of you as one either. Did it come across that way (sorry if it did) or are you just kidding?
Sort of, or at least some lazy kid that never did any work :). Don't worry, you wouldn't be able to hurt my feelings unless you really really tried hard ;).
Daniel
PS Speaking of sleeping in, I'm kinda curious how well the Bisceglias slept on their first "real" campout :). (Besides waking eachother up in the night...)
Daniel~ Oh, ok, good. You had us worried.
Bisceglias~ You have inspired us all so much that we now have a tent set up by our house. :) And I guess we are sleeping in it all this week (?). We'll see... A few of us did last night.=)
Krista~ Since earlier the subject was shoes… Someone recently gave Judah some slippers they had crocheted for him and someone else told him he could wear them at the Ceili. To this he remarked, “And Krista will say: oh how cute!” =)
~S
Daniel- don't worry we will not try.
Bisceglias - Ditto ;)
Lol, good ;).
Tent? That ruins it! You can't even see the stars!
Daniel
PS Crocheted slippers? Wow, I learn new things every day...
Daniel
Yes, Daniel crochet slippers... One of my sisters made them for Judah. I knit slippers. ;)
Incredible... just incredible...
