Moments with the Dictionary of Music #1

This is the first of a new weekly posting series. It’s all about music, and musical terms! The definitions will be taken from The Harvard Dictionary of Music, unless otherwise noted. The definitions and descriptions may be abbreviated from what is found in the dictionary.

I have a weakness for spending time reading the dictionary of music when I go to look a word up - it’s something I love to do - and so I’m particularly excited to be sharing these findings with you all.

Da Capo [It., abbr. D.C.]. From the beginning, and hence an indication that a piece is to be repeated from the beginning to the end, to a place marked fine (da capo al fine), or to a place marked with a specified sign (e.g., da capo al segno, or al coda). On reaching the sign in the last case, the player is to skip ahead to the next occurrence of the coda sign, often marking the beginning of a coda.

Wow, that's interesting... that might have just totally gone over my head, but I think I get the general idea: you skip a few measures of music right?
Oh, and are we supposed to guess who posts these? Sounds like fun...

You're not the only one with this "weakness". :) May I now direct my piano student to your blog when I don't know a musical term and can't find the dictionary??

Ah! You're not alone with that weakness! I do the same thing; we have "The Golden Encyclopedia of Music" by Norman Lloyd. I love reading it... but of course I love looking at the pictures too! ;)
And if we are suppose to guess, I say that was Janna!
=)

...And I didn't even know there was a musical dictionary...
Maybe I should just read these posts and not comment, lol...

Daniel, D.C. basically means to repeat from the beginning. It usually goes along with some other instructions, which might indicate skipping some measures at a certain point in the piece.

I'm glad we're all going to learn so much from this new series, and I'm glad you girls like browsing the music dictionary, too. :)

And, this is Kathrina that's posting them, Bethany.

That was my other guess... but I didn't think it was "fair" to guess two!
Better luck next time!!!

Seriously? I was going to guess Janna too, but I didn't see Bethany's guess.
Ok, reapeat, not skip, repeat. Got it!
Haha, and what if you're wrong both times, Bethany?
