Because of our involvement with the All-Ireland Cultural Society, we given the opportunity to request an invitation to a reception in downtown Portland given in honor of President Mary McAleese of Ireland. In a historic visit, the President came to Portland to preside at the unveiling of the Irish Famine Memorial at Mt. Calvary cemetery. We received an invitation to join over 500 other enthusiasts of Irish culture Saturday afternoon at the Embassy Suites hotel in Portland.
A contingent of the Portland police were on hand to escort the President. It was fascinating to witness the security measures taken during the President's visit.
