Would a fly with no wings be called a "walk"?

very interesting... the unanswered riddles are getting harder... :)

I think not, I think it would be a crawl. :) actually I don't really have time to think up a better answer, but I'll come back later with an even wittier answer :)

Hmmm... I am going to think about this one...

But I do like Daniel's idea. I would prefer "crawl" over "walk".

I think that wingless flies are called maggots. ;-)

Yes, I think I “wingless” fly would indeed be called a Maggot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Maggots.jpg

And Daniel- regarding posting… Have you ever heard of a “Schedule Post”? You can schedule your posts with blogger.

Okay, Bethany here.

I think that this is kind of a trick question. Here’s what I mean…
“Fly” is not the real name of a fly… it’s a nickname. The real name is: “Musca domestica”.

But in answer to the question… I would not call it a “walk”. I would call it an “annoyance”!

Actually, I think Johan’s right!

LOL! I wonder what they would call a domesticated fly? Maybe "Musca domestica domestica".

Hi-
Good thoughts! However, I really think it was talking about an adult fly. Oh well, we have to be realistic I suppose. :)

Oh yes...I remember studying those genus and species titles...but I'm not sure about a domesticated fly. ;)

Daniel, I had the riddle scheduled to post. Funny that you noticed on the fourth 3am post. :)

ok ok, I see now that all of them were at 3 AM :). but seriously, why would you put it at 3 AM? for your followers in New York? :)

Oh, I came up with another good name for “The Flightless Fly”… I think it should be called a “Hexapede”.

Hexapede--very clever. ;-)

The only problem is that centipedes don't have exactly 100 feet.

Mutant.

although flies do have exactly six feet... at least most of them do. have you ever counted them? it seems as though every time I do, they leave with only four and a half legs and no wings. now, if there is any special word for four and a half, then that is definitely what we should dub those flies.

Daniel

PS the reason I was talking weird is because I just watched Sherlock Holmes and I kinda like way he talked.

Ah, Watson, now you are speaking sense; or is that 5 shillings and a ha'penny?

Daniel Ahrens said...

elementary, Dr. Watson.

Kathrina: Since you remember the genus and species titles... do you, by any chance, remember: "King Philip Cried Out 'For Goodness Sake!'"?
...Just wondering... ;)

Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

100% from memory (and I haven't said that list for almost a year!).

Ebenezer Forest Farm said...

WOW! I’m impressed! Although I never was big on biology… Physical Science? Now your talking!

~Bethany

Ebenezer Forest Farm said...

Wait a minuet! I just thought of something!

Wasn’t it YOU Kathrina, that wanted to throw your biology book in the ocean!
(I guess you’ll have to thank Krista or else you wouldn’t know KPCOFGS!)

~Bethany

Daniel Ahrens said...

No!!! No! No! No! No! No!!!!!!! We were talking about Sherlock Holmes!!!! Not Biology!!!!! oh well, I think I'm probably outnumbered anyway... if it came to a vote...

haha! I read about Kathrina trying to throw out the Biology book :), it gave me a great idea... but I made a fatal mistake. see, Kathrina's book couldn't swim back... Jonathan could...

Alright Bethany, I think we caught up on all that last night (although I'm tempted to ask you about the four criteria of life). :)

Daniel, that is very funny. Also, since Krista saved the biology book, I decided to go ahead give it my best effort... you might try that with Jonathan...

hang on a minute while I stop laughing.

ok let's see... rats! I forgot what you said!!! I can't scroll down and read it again or else I'll start laughing again! oh yeah now I remember. heh heh heh. uh oh.

ok. I'm back; my eyes are dry, I have decent control over my laughter, and now everyone in the house is wondering what I was laughing about. oh, I guess I'm the only one in the house, whatever.

ok, I have decided that I will give Jonathan my best effort, but I think that next time I see him I'll burst out laughing again. maybe it's just easier to throw him in for the fish again... maybe I'll try taking him surfing or something.

Wow! I find it interesting to see what this riddle discussion has led too… Sherlock Holmes, Biology, and now it’s sibling relationships! :) I’m wondering what the next riddle will lead to…

And Daniel: You were discussing Sherlock Holmes with Johan and Bethany and Katharina were going over Biology (two discussions at the same time).

Katharina: We certainly enjoyed see you all! Perhaps the next riddle will be about Biology? :)

Oh dear… the moment I saw that you wanted to know the four criteria’s of life, I thought from my very tired brain (I went to bed at 12:30 am!) : “I don’t know!” (But of course, according to YOU if you don’t remember, it must not be that important! …Sorry, just HAD to say that! ;) ) So I took a quick Biology book peek and once I saw the answer thought: “Wait of course I remember discussing this even before I started biology!”

So here it is… from memory and in order!

All life forms:

1. Must have DNA
2. Must be able to take energy from the surroundings and convert it to energy to support itself
3. Must be able to sense and adapt to outside changes
4. Must be able to reproduce

Okay… that’s it. (And I thought we straightened out that I like Physical Science… not biology!)

Daniel: Good decision. Remember, easy is not always best. :)

Shiloh: I really had no idea that these riddles would lead to all these subjects either. :) Actually, I guess the next one could fall under biology, but I'll let you make your own judgement when you see it.

Bethany: :) :) :) :) I know we straightened it out about you liking Physical Science, but I couldn't resist. You see, Krista and I were talking about the four characteristics for life on the way to your house. :) (And, to get another thing straight, according to ME it can be important even if you forget it, and if it IS important, it will (hopefully) come back to you. (But you knew that.)) ;)

Alright, enough said. Have a good evening everyone. ~Kathrina

I guess if it has something to do with anything alive it's biology...

Johan! come back and be Watson!!!
